It is characterised by its red earthenware body, covered with white glaze on the front and a rich brown glaze on the reverse. Originally produced in Rouen, in the Normandy region of northern France, this style later spread throughout the country. Its quiet beauty and dignified presence have captivated collectors around the world, making it a highly sought-after and rare piece. This plate bears a traditional French ceramic repair known as Réparation à l’agrafe — a method similar to the Japanese Kasugai-tsugi alternative called staple repair . Small metal staples are inserted across the crack to hold the piece together. It is said that this repair technique disappeared after the 19th century. Therefore, pieces bearing this method are understood to date from the 19th century or earlier. Being able to see such an old restoration method is truly special. The crackle (craquelure) of the white glaze on the front is simply beautiful.
