Anemones drawn in a nostalgic French blue. The delicate design is simply beautiful. You can feel the warmth and quiet elegance of late 19th century handwork. Clairefontaine was a pottery factory founded in 1804 in the Franche-Comté region in eastern France, near the Swiss border. It produced faience and terre de fer pieces from the 19th to the early 20th century. Terre de fer is a strong French earthenware, somewhere between pottery and porcelain. It is made from a mix of clay, feldspar and quartz, which makes it harder and more durable than ordinary pottery, with a white tone close to porcelain. A clear glaze gives it a smooth and slightly glossy finish. In some periods, lead glaze was also used. Many pieces feature transfer-printed motifs of flowers, trees and birds, with a wide variety of designs. The back stamp shows the anchor mark with “LG”, used during the time Léon Graves directed the factory (1894–1913). Pieces with this LG mark are especially popular. Fewer pieces remain today, making this a rare item. Founded in 1798, it is one of the historic ceramic factories in France. One of Longwy’s best-known styles is enamel decoration, where colourful glazes are placed inside patterns outlined with black lines. The finish looks a bit like cloisonné and feels very decorative. Antique and vintage Longwy pieces are especially popular with collectors. This plate is quite large, about 40 cm long. Gien was founded in 1821 and became known as a supplier to the French royal household. It was established by an Englishman, A. Hall, who brought English ceramic techniques to France.Terre de Fer was one of the main materials used. Terre de Fer is a strong French earthenware, somewhere between pottery and porcelain. During the late 19th to early 20th century, food preservation culture developed significantly in France. Its well-known drink, Quinquina, is a wine-based herbal liqueur flavored with quinine, a natural medicinal extract obtained from the bark of the cinchona tree, historically used as a treatment for malaria. This bottle once contained that liqueur and dates from around the 1920s–1950s. When held up to the light, the semi-transparent olive green glass softly glows, revealing the retro “St. Raphaël Quinquina” lettering. This is a very old piece with a wonderful sense of history. In traditional jam making, the fruit is often cooked quickly over high heat to preserve its flavour. For this reason, copper pans — known for their excellent heat conductivity — have long been used in French households for making jam.
