In France, truffles are mainly harvested in southern regions such as Périgord, Provence, and Occitanie. To preserve the delicate aroma and quality of this prized ingredient, dark green glass bottles with strong light-blocking properties were often used. During the late 19th to early 20th century, food preservation culture developed significantly in France. At that time, the technique of preserving food in glass containers—known as the Appert method—became widely used. Truffles, foie gras, vegetables and other foods were commonly stored in sealed jars and bottles. This preservation technique was developed in the early 19th century by the French inventor Nicolas Appert, and is considered the origin of modern canning and bottling methods. Food was placed in a container, sealed with cork or wax, then heated in boiling water or steam before being cooled to maintain an airtight seal, allowing food to be preserved for long periods. The deep dark-green glass blocks light, while the slightly narrowed neck helps create a tight seal—details that clearly reflect its original purpose as a storage bottle. Its well-known drink, Quinquina, is a wine-based herbal liqueur flavored with quinine, a natural medicinal extract obtained from the bark of the cinchona tree, historically used as a treatment for malaria. This bottle once contained that liqueur and dates from around the 1920s–1950s. When held up to the light, the semi-transparent olive green glass softly glows, revealing the retro “St. Raphaël Quinquina” lettering. This type of bottle was commonly used for household wine in the early 1900s to around the 1930s in France. You can still sense traces of traditional glassmaking such as hand-blown or mould-blown techniques. Even bottles of the same shape often have slightly different expressions, which is part of the charm of vintage glass. The base features the pushed-up indentation typical of old wine bottles, reflecting the glassmaking methods of the time.
