The curved body still shows the hand-hammered marks from when it was shaped by hand, giving it a warm, handmade character. The form is simple but very stylish, and also quite practical. The tin coating has worn away in places over time, revealing the darker grey iron underneath. This kind of ageing is part of the charm of antique metal pieces. The warm orange glaze is often seen in pottery from the Provence region. You can also see areas of unglazed clay, which is part of the rustic traditional style of southern France. In the 19th century, it was common in southern France to use the local clay as it was. This clay is rich in iron and has a naturally coarse texture. This natural, earthy material is one of the things that gives southern French pottery its distinctive character.
