During the late 19th to early 20th century, food preservation culture developed significantly in France. At that time, the technique of preserving food in glass containers—known as the Appert method—became widely used. Truffles, foie gras, vegetables and other foods were commonly stored in sealed jars and bottles. Its well-known drink, Quinquina, is a wine-based herbal liqueur flavored with quinine, a natural medicinal extract obtained from the bark of the cinchona tree, historically used as a treatment for malaria. This bottle once contained that liqueur and dates from around the 1920s–1950s.
