フランス・ルーアン窯のキュノワールのオーバルプレートです。

キュノワールとは..
キュ(Cul)をフランス語の卑俗の口語でお尻のこと
ノワール(Noir)は黒
赤土の素地に白い釉薬と裏側に茶の釉薬がかけられているのが特徴です。
フランスの北、ノルマンディー地方のルーアンで作られるようになり、フランス各地に広がったようです。

その美しさ・佇まいに魅了され世界中にコレクターがいるほどで、希少なお品です。

フランスでの陶器を修復する方法のひとつ、Réparation à l'agrafe（=日本でいう鎹（かすがい）継ぎ）がヒビの部分に施されています。ホッチキスのようなパーツを埋め込んで止めています。

Réparation à l'agrafeの手法は19世紀で終了しているそうで、継ぎがあるものは19世紀までの古いお品だということがわかります。昔の修復方法が拝見できるのはとても貴重ですね。

表は白釉薬の貫入がとにかく素晴らしいです。
また、裏の端部分の白釉薬が茶に溶け込み霜降りのような色合いが美しく圧巻です。

【Rouen “Cul Noir” Oval Plate】

An oval Cul Noir plate from Faïence de Rouen, France.

“Cul Noir” literally means “black bottom” —
Cul being a colloquial French word for “bottom,” and Noir meaning black.
It is characterised by its red earthenware body, covered with white glaze on the front and a rich brown glaze on the reverse.

Originally produced in Rouen, in the Normandy region of northern France, this style later spread throughout the country.

Its quiet beauty and dignified presence have captivated collectors around the world, making it a highly sought-after and rare piece.

This plate bears a traditional French ceramic repair known as Réparation à l’agrafe
— a method similar to the Japanese Kasugai-tsugi alternative called staple repair . Small metal staples are inserted across the crack to hold the piece together.

It is said that this repair technique disappeared after the 19th century. Therefore, pieces
bearing this method are understood to date from the 19th century or earlier. Being able to see such an old restoration method is truly special.

The crackle (craquelure) of the white glaze on the front is simply beautiful.

On the reverse, the way the white glaze softly melts into the brown along the rim creates a marbled, almost frosted appearance — absolutely striking.
